Do you want to learn a Native language?

Louis Joseph ?a: na (I am Louis Joseph)

Louis Joseph ?a: na

(I am Louis Joseph)

The journey continues.

I’ve been learning Northern Pomo for the past month or so and I must say it is getting a bit easier to understand. I’m by no stretch of the imagination a pro, or even a novice, but i am making progress.

The real question is who can I speak to? As of right I only have a few people that I can interact with. In order for a language to be useful, it has to be used. The plan is, once I’m good enough to understand a simple question, I will learn the response, and use it daily with my daughter. An example would be, are you good? Yes, I am good.

As of now, I only have a few very simple sentences to work with, but it’s a great foundation. Currently I’m using phrases such as, “I am good” , “I am here” , and “I am tired.”

All of these phrases use the words —?a: na (which translates to I am).

Then inserting the specific verb, noun or adjective to create a simple sentence is all that’s left to do.

With that spirit in mind I plan on posting some easy to learn phrases for everyone to use. This week is I am good and I am (__insert your name here__).

K’edi ?a: na —- I am good pronunciation (Keh Dee, ahh , nah )

Louis Joseph ?a: na ——- I am Louis Joseph pronunciation (name, ahh, nah)

Language preservation is subject and movement that I take very seriously, and you should too. It’s the key to unlocking our original ways and beliefs.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my monthly language update, I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you next month.

If you don’t know, now you know, a Native.

Native Artist Spotlight

We are thrilled to announce the launch of a brand-new section devoted exclusively to spotlighting Native artists and their rich, often untold, stories of cultural heritage, identity, and resilience.

This initiative is born from a recognition and understanding that these voices have been underrepresented in mainstream platforms.

By dedicating a platform to these talented individuals, we seek not only to amplify their voices but also to foster a deeper appreciation for our Tribal communities' unique artistic contributions, narratives, and perspectives in the wider public domain.

Our journey to creating this inclusive space will involve extensive collaboration with Native artists, cultural practitioners, and community leaders to ensure authenticity in representation and sensitivity to the issues and stories presented.

This new section will serve as a vibrant, dynamic showcase of traditional and contemporary art forms, ranging from painting, sculpture, and weaving to digital media, performance, writing and more. Each featured work is not just an artistic expression but a storyline—a fusion of past, present, and future, relayed through colors, shapes, textures, and sounds that resonate with the lived experiences of Native people.

Moving forward, we are committed to engaging our audience with a variety of content that inspires, educates, and provokes thoughtful conversation.

This includes artist spotlights, interviews, virtual gallery tours, and bonus interactive Q&A sessions that allow direct engagement with the creators.

We believe that through this immersive experience, viewers can gain a more holistic understanding of the contexts and traditions from which Native art emerges. In doing so, we hope to cultivate a community of advocates and aficionados who are as passionate about supporting and celebrating the works of Native artists as we are.

So, starting next week, the “Real News” section will be replaced by the “Native Artist Spotlight” section. If you have any artists that you feel should be in the spotlight, please submit links to their pages as well as contact information of the artist.

Please email all spotlight suggestions to:[email protected]
